Advanced Practice Nursing

in response to Advanced Practice Nursing
Dear Editor:
I write in response to the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) topic. Many APNs have difficulty finding the balance between collaborating with other health care professionals and practicing in an autonomous manner. The ultimate goal for many practicing APNs is a high level of independence. However, current state regulations and/or community norms may limit independent practice. What then can APNs do to achieve professional fulfillment in spite of current limits on their practice? One way for APNs to improve their job satisfaction is by working together in a cohesive manner, which can be accomplished by joining their professional organizations and becoming active participants in these organizations. Active involvement in professional organizations will enable APNs to work with lobbyists who will advocate for policies that will support APNs in an independent practice role. Making our voices heard in the legislative chambers holds great potential for allowing APNs to practice using all the skills they are capable of using.
